Principled leadership

Army, has spent a lifetime studying and perfecting the art of leadership—both during times of combat and peace. Hal Moore established his place in military history in when he led his vastly outnumbered troops to prevail in the first major battle of the Vietnam War. Both on the battlefield and off, he has spent his lifetime studying and encouraging strong, principled leadership as a soldier and a human being. Here are his 17 leadership precepts:

Principled leaders apply values and virtues to policy development and decision-making. Principled leadership occurs when these men and women allow their principles to dictate their actions.

The values and virtues found in principled leadership may be influenced by cultural and religious beliefs. One of the largest and most successful family businesses in my community, Clemens Food Groupis guided by Christian principles. Their company leadership and culture live them every day.

Principled leaders consistently adhere to a group of guiding values or virtues. Here is a list compiled from various sources and personal observation. They put the interests of the institution or constituents they serve above their own self-interest.

They communicate a shared vision. They understand that character is defined by what happens when nobody is looking. They promote others, not themselves. They take responsibility for personal failures and the failures of any groups they lead.

They are consistent with how they make decisions. They are not afraid to make unpopular decisions, but clearly explain their rationale to those who will be affected. They share credit for any successes with the people who made them possible.

They do what is right rather than what is convenient, regardless of the consequences. Imagine how different many of our national political debates and decisions might be if they were guided by principled leadership?

What changes might you notice in your business if principled leaders acted with courage and honor? The impact of principled leadership is often felt most acutely when those leaders retire or move on.
